Training edit
I am a little skeptical about the use of Fiore Dei Liberi's work being used to train the Arditi. Though a citation is provided it is a little misleading. The reference cited shows no mention of the Arditi but rather discusses Liberi's work. It would appear that an assumption has been made purely on face value alone. In 1928 Paolo Giudici, a former officer in the Arditi, writing about the their infantry school at San Giovanni di Manzano states that: "...Manzano ebbe una scuola di lotta giapponese, una di scherma con la sciabola, baionetta, pugnale, bastone, petardo. Una scuola di ciclismo, equitazione nuoto ed alpinismo" "....Manzano was a school of Japanese Wrestling, sabre fencing, bayonet, dagger, stick-fighting and grenade usage. A school of cycling, swimming and hiking"[1]
Mario Carli, who had been in the 18º reparto d'assalto of the Arditi, in 1919 wrote the following: "La preparazione per il combattimento individuale comprendeva la difesa personale a mani libere, derivata dal ju-jitsu giapponese. Gli ufficiali (più per mantenere una certa distinzione che per effettiva utilità) praticavano la scherma di sciabola e di bastone a una mano". "The preparation for individual combat comprised of unarmed self-defense, based upon Japanese Ju-Jitsu. The officers (more for keeping some distinction than practical use) did saber fencing and one handed stick-fighting."[2]
It seems from the primary sources that Ju-Jitsu has far greater legitimacy for the core hand-to-hand training component of the Arditi than Fiori di Battaglia and I really doubt that Historic European Martial Arts can claim much contribution to the training of the Arditi - Mario Carli even maintains that the sabre fencing was not really intended for practical use. I would be very interested if any clear, direct and concrete references emerged relating to Fiore's work being used in training. However, as this article is worded now, it gives the public a distorted impression of the influence of historic European combat manuscripts in modern military training. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Criticalhema (talk • contribs) 10:25, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
