External Links edit

Why is it acceptible to add links to a commercial book for the purpose of sales, but not to free tutorials that assist in setting up and using Tomcat (similar to the C language page)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Naidim (talkcontribs) 22:05, 11 September 2006

That other articles also violate policy is irrelevant. In the particular case of the O'Reilly book, it's the canonical reference book for the application. Perhaps one has heard of a library? I've corrected the link to a book citation rather than just a normal external link. Chris Cunningham 08:20, 12 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
I didn't realize there was a policy against linking to free information, yet allowing commercial information. As a server administrator for setting up Tomcat I've found "Professional Apache Tomcat 5" by Wrox press to be superior to the O'Reilly's book. What makes the O'Reilly book "canonical"? Also would there be a policy against linking to the (again Free) Tomcat-Book project at http://tomcatbook.sourceforge.net/en/index.shtml? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Naidim (talkcontribs) 19:23, 15 September 2006

Why is Resin, a "competitor" to Tomcat, given a link on this page? I only see it mentioned one in the external links. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.181.51.0 (talkcontribs) 20:19, 22 April 2007

See also SPAM edit

Tcat is another commercial offering linked to externally which has been present in the See also list (at the top no less) since 26 June 2012. The edits were performed by a single, unregistered user who also edited Apache Tomcat, Mule (Software), MuleSoft, and the Talk:Apache Synapse pages. The IP is also static and located within commuting distance to MuleSoft which seems a bit fishy to me... PaulMEdwards (talk) 22:13, 9 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Catalina Merge edit

I believe the information on Catalina should be merged into the Tomcat article. It is not significant enough on its own. As long as the Catalina_(Tomcat) page redirects to Apache_Tomcat it would be fine. A yes from me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lantrix (talkcontribs) 07:12, 22 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Web Server or Application Server edit

It's given here that Tomcat is an application server or web-server. But apache tomcat is a webserver only right? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pradeepnnv (talkcontribs) 05:20, 20 March 2008

My understanding is that it is both an application server (which can then be proxied through to a web server such as Apache HTTP Server) or that it can host websites itself through its web server interface. ~~ [Jam][talk] 20:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
It is most definitely an Application Server, because you can deploy application bundles directly into it. Contrast that to the Apache Web Server, which provides CGI capabilities which can be used to build/host applications, but the applications themselves are distinct from the web server. (Okay, please ignore in-process modules like mod_php and mod_perl.) 2600:4040:452A:E000:8935:A079:C6D1:B8A (talk) 19:12, 27 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Comparisons to other equivalent or similar products edit

I think it would be useful (at least for me it would be) to list the similarities and differences of Tomcat vs. Apache Web Server (a brief explanation is offered in immediately preceding section) vs. MicroSoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) vs. other popular servers. Comparisons can be a helpful learning technique; e.g., it might be eaiser to understand what an apple is by comparing it to an orange, banana, or strawberry. Tomcat 64 bit vs. 32 bit edit

Can we add a new section on 64 bit and 32 bit versions...and details thereon including max memory it has actually been used with? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tcat64 (talkcontribs) 15:41, 15 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Regular version works fine on 64-bit machines. Article needs not address specific technical issues. WP is not a tech blog or tutorial site. Pagen HD (talk) 13:05, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deployment section edit

The deployment section is a copy/paste from the header (intro) of the article. Ended the copy/paste block, and still there are definitions. I think It has nothing to do with "Deployment". 186.22.214.99 (talk) 17:46, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Apache Tomcat is beiing used to force people to carry popups in AOL software, when people have opted out of popups. How do we get rid of Apache Tomcat and still keep the elements of Java that we want? 99.233.146.147 (talk) 00:15, 22 September 2014 (UTC) 99.233.146.147 (talk) 00:15, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

info box edit

The info box says the version number and date of the preview release (8.0.15, Nov 2014) is older than the stable release (8.0.26, Aug 2015). Is that right?? Mcswell (talk) 01:06, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Not sure what the confusion is, previews come before full releases, no? DP76764 (Talk) 17:26, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
