editI have a doubt. In the site referenced ( first link : http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/pranayama/basic/viloma.asp ) it is instructed to hold the breath after inhaling, and then to exhale. But in the article it is specified that, we have to exhale through the other nostril after inhaling; without specifying the retention of breath. In some websites, it is given that one has to hold the breath while doing Anulom Pranayama, and some websites say that one should not hold the breath while doing any Pranayama. The question is whether one should hold the breath while practicing this pranayama or not??

Both of them are right. Pranayama with retention of breath is adviced for advanced yoga students, while the other one for beginners. There is no harm in doing either of them following a 1:2:2 (for beginners) or 1:4:4 (for advanced students) time ratio between inhalation, retention and exhalation of breath, It is adviced that the inhalation time must be atleast 4 or 5 seconds.
