The stewards and jockeys did not their lesson: four years later Barefoot won an equally chaotic, twice-run Leger. I think the problem is that most races at the time had two, three or four runners: when confronted by fields of 20+ the methods of starting (which effectively consisted of the starter saying "Ready...
