Did the person that wrote this complete nonsense ever read the film?????? The plot given is that of Androclus from Aesop's fables. The plot of the actual film is based on George Bernard Shaw's, "Androcles and the Lion", and actually fairly well follows that play and even reproduces much of Shaw's humour (without his philosophical asides). I should kno2 - I have just watched the film, ending about quarter of an hour ago. The plot review given was a disgraceful cut-and-paste from Wikipedia's article on "Aesop's Fables". Whoever perpetrated this dreck never watched the film, should never have written the article, being thereby unfit, and should be thoroughly ashamed. I give my name to stand by my words, Paul McKeown. Harpo as Androcles

Harpo Marx was originally cast as Androcles before being replaced by Alan Young (source: The Marx Brothers Encyclopedia: Glen Mitchell 1992). Alan went on to great fame with another animal :Mr Ed. MBG 119.11.8.52 (talk) 10:32, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Further development

This article is in need of further development, and citations. An excellent source for anyone who has the time is "The Disciple and His Devil" by Valerie Pascal. Several rare facts about the film are in it, including a law suit between Pascal and RKO head Howard Hughes over a vestal virgins scene inserted by Hughes to give the film sex-appeal, as well as more detail about the aborted screen testing of Harpo Marx for the leading roll.
