I thought this article might include the fact that the star Alnilam in Orion is claimed to be the home of Victor Lundlin's character Friday in the 1964 film "Robinson Crusoe on Mars." Gspong 18:43, 15 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

most powerful star

edit

I think this is an error, and it should be "most powerful type of bright star". e Ori isn't really even close to being the most powerful in terms of total output. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.105.72.35 (talk) 02:08, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Distance 2000 ly

edit

This disagrees with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_stars_in_Orion which gives 1342 ly, and http://stars.astro.illinois.edu/sow/alnilam.html which says "...Alnilam's measured (though rather uncertain) distance of 1340 light years." User:hicksw 18:37 15 MAY 2017 (UTC).

The two other sources you mention are uncited and hence irrelevant. The Wikipedia list distance might usefully be corrected since it ought to at least be consistent with the one given here with a reference. The Kaler distance is simply out of date. The distance in the article is derived (automatically, by the starbox template) from the Hipparcos parallax. As discussed in Puebla et al (2015), this value does give a substantially higher distance than most previous estimates, but it is the one they adopt and use in their analysis. This difference is mentioned briefly in the article. Maybe the Hipparcos distance will turn out to be wrong, maybe the older distances will turn out to be wrong, or maybe both, who knows. For now, we just quote the "most reliable" references we can get our hands on. Lithopsian (talk) 19:22, 15 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
