And we didn't need overseas coaling stations until 1871.

A new steamship line began transporting passengers and mail from Bombay to the port of Suez in the late 1820s. From Suez the passengers and mail travelled overland to Alexandria (the so-called Suez overland route), where they boarded another ship.
