Holy Well?

I removed the citation for the Holy Well paragraph as it just pointed to somebody's profile on a forum. No mention of the well was found on the link. Additionally, although I have not researched into who "Tony" is, but I suspect he would not be deemed a reliable source. Periglio (talk) 19:17, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Do we have any proof that it is in-fact a Holy Well/Sacred Spring? These sites were usually associated with a local saint or had some sort of saintly dedication: this has nothing. A quick google search reveals very little information about the well, and the only ones calling it a "holy well" are far from reliable sources.

The stonework surrounding the well is Grade II listed: the listing calls it a medieval well head: there is no mention of it being holy. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-189969-well-head-ab-kettleby-leicestershire

There is a nearby village which is part of the parish of Ab Kettleby called Holwell- so maybe some confusion comes from that name?

But these are defiantly not the same thing - the Well at Ab Kettleby is on Well Lane/Church Lane; Holwell Mouth is about a KM to the north, away from the villages, and hidden in some woods.

It could just be a local tradition to call it holy - anyone any ideas?

I hate to add to the confusion but the derivation of the name Holwell doesn't seem to indicate holiness either. It seems to mean spring in a hollow, which fits the description of Holwell Mouth<Dictionary of English Place-Names by AD Miles (Oxford 1992.)≥ The "holy well" tradition, if it is one, seems to go back at least to 1628. See the Inscription on Everard Digby's memorial tablet which is in Ab Kettleby Church. It puns on the name Holwell and "Holiwell", which doesn't help us decide if the holy well is at Ab Kettleby or Holwell. Spinney Hill (talk) 23:35, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Copyright violation?

I have removed the following section:

Near the village pond, surrounded by orange-coloured ironstone cottages indicative of the area. Traditionally, it provided a good supply and never ran dry. After the construction of new houses nearby in 1992 the well dried up, but by 2001 was flowing copiously again. Unfortunately in 2001 a metal grating was fitted that blocks all access to the water. The present well structure is a truncated pyramid just over a yard high and surmounted by what at first glance appears to be an upturned font but was probably a previous basin for the well.
