Context and need for more sources
editWilson appears to believe that it is only Chesnutt's treatment of white society that prevented this novel from being published, but other accounts differ. He had only published a few short stories at that time, and editors encouraged him to better establish his reputation before trying to publish a novel. (See Chesnutt bio article and sources.) It may also have simply not been very good, as not all first novels deserve to be published. More sources than Wilson should be used; commentary on the themes and other aspects of the novel need RS.Parkwells (talk) 16:25, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
