Submarines edit
As far as I know this was the only US four inch naval gun in use during WWII. If so, I think it was mounted on many of the Gato and Balao class submarines, not just the 12 listed. Rees11 (talk) 21:49, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- There were also 4"/40 caliber and 4"/39 caliber guns in use by U.S. Navy ships, some of which were probably still in use during WWII. The 4"/50 caliber, though, was the primary 4-inch gun of the U.S. Navy in WWII. — Bellhalla (talk) 22:16, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- I can confirm that there is a 4"/50 caliber gun mounted on the Gato-class submarine USS Silversides (SS-236), currently docked as in Muskegon, Michigan as part of the Great Lakes Naval Museum and Memorial (GLNMM). The historical account given at the museum was that the 3" gun was deemed ineffective against surface targets and the sub was refitted with the 4"/50 caliber early in the war. Unfortunately, GLNMM has very little of their historical documentation available via the Internet. --JoeM42 (talk) 15:18, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
