Talk:2018 Tajikistan tourist attack

name of victim edit

One of the names of the victims is almost certainly incorrect. "Voke Ren Willem" is not a probable Dutch name. (Willem is a first name, not a family name, that would be Willems, not Willem. Het Parool, a Dutch newspaper, interviewed the brother of one of the Victims, and identifies him as René Wokke and his partner as Kim Postma. [1] I haven't looked at any sources for the Swiss victim, but again, it's more likely that his name is Markus Hamel than Hamel Markus. If the source is that sloppy with the facts, it probably should not be used at all. --Vexations (talk) 20:30, 22 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the remarks, I'll correct what you pointed out. I don't think it calls into question the use of The Telegraph as a source though. My guess is that they've got their ino from Tajik authorities who are not familiar with Western names.--Kimdime (talk) 10:38, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
That's very likely, those names show up in many sources. The Telegraph cautiously wrote "The ministry named the dead cyclists as". They repeated a wrong claim without doing any fact-checking, but it's probably the kind of thing you can get away with if you're the "newspaper of record". --Vexations (talk) 10:55, 23 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
