According to the rules, Belgium and South Africa should be playing in the qual. tournament based on their finish last year. The IIQ tournament itself is peculiar because it does not appear to function as other IIHF qual. where the two top move on to the next level. qualification for 2015?

There reads: The competition also serves as qualifications for the 2015 competition.
But, IIHF World Women's Championships has this: However, as part of an effort to improve competition, the IIHF decided to hold Women's Championships in Olympic years, starting in 2014.

you appear to be correct, I was puzzled why the promotion statement here said 2014. However, the rule book states that the top division will not be played in Olympic years while Division I and II will be. That in in itself is an obvious problem because the Olympics may not feature the same nations as the top division. Waiting until next year's program is announced (in may) may be preferable to changing it now because of the ambiguity.18abruce (talk) 01:45, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

They have never played in Olympic years before, this article indicates that they will begin in 2014, rule book says no for top division, "each year" for division I and II as confirmed by the page for the IIQ tournament. In the past the rule book has not always matched with what happened, so I think caution is advisable.18abruce (talk) 21:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

The IIHF Statutes and bylaws say (P68, §902) (my emphasis):

"1. Date

The IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship will be played each year in March/April, and must be finished at least one week prior to the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. However, the IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship (top division) will not be played in Olympic years."

And then, in §903:

"1. Date

The IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship Division I and Division II will be played each year in March/April."

If there is a 2014 edition in lower pools, there would presumably be a team promoted to the main tournament from below. But if that's the case, it's beyond me how this would be handled. AFAICT, the IIHF sport regulations have no provision for "vertically" seeding a 9-team tournament. As 18abruce says, "caution is advisable". I guess a solution would emerge in May or in September. So this was qualification for 2015 championships. But what then are the 2014 chamionships? Since the teams have already promoted and relegated. Will the I division winner be promoted to 2015 as well? 80.222.92.196 (talk) 12:03, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

The explanation is in the lead on the 2014 article, briefly the top level will only play in the olympics but all promotion and relegation will happen in 2014 as in a normal year with the olympic 8th place team being relegated to division 1a for 2015. That's not what reads there. There is: However after discussion it was changed so that the two teams in question will play a best two out of three series instead of simply swapping places.

The "two teams in question" are the promoted teams from 2013 and 2014. Your comment would suggest that the Olympic tournament were acting as the top division of the worlds. However, the explanation in the lead says that Japan (promoted team from 2013) and 2014 Division I Group A winner would play a series for the place. 85.217.15.230 (talk) 02:37, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Do your homework before criticizing, and then maybe actually read the source material. The last place team in the olympics will play against the Division IA winner instead of (as initially indicated) being swapped in relegation and promotion. Who won the 2013 Division IA tournament is irrelevent. Further, if you look at the date of my previous post, and the date of the IIHF press release, and the change I made to the 2014 page, I hope a light bulb will go on for you.18abruce (talk) 11:30, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
