Synchronized skating (inclusion or exclusion) edit

Hi! About the in- or exclusion of synchronized skating: ISU has a combined web page for men, ladies, pairs and ice dance, but I really doubt we should delete synchro based on that mere technicality – synchronized skating is an artistic sport (unlike speed skating) and it has lots of same elements with other figure skating disciplines. So, here's some sort of discussion for starters. Please, share your thoughts! -- Puisque (talk) 22:32, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

By the way: by definition, synchronized skating is a discipline of figure skating, just like men's single, ladies' single, pair skating and ice dancing (and unlike speed skating). -- Puisque (talk) 22:43, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Also, separate events are not a criterion rational enough to exclude synchro from this page – it is, again, a mere technicality how we restructure the article to reflect the fact that men's, ladies', pairs and ice dancers compete at the same events (e.g. European Figure Skating Championships). -- Puisque (talk) 22:43, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

In my edit comments, I noted that synchro has a separate official ISU page and does not usually compete with M/L/P/D disciplines. We might conclude from this that the audience for one does not have tremendous overlap with the audience for the other. Readers of this page wishing to find M/L/P/D information may be confused as to why synchro is also here, as the competitions they follow do not include synchro. I would prefer to accurately represent the reality of this divide, rather than use this page to advocate for all-inclusiveness.
Another major difference between M/L/P/D and synchro is that the former focuses on the achievements of the individuals while the latter focuses on the achievements of a group. For instance, in records, M/L/P/D medals are always awarded to individuals (even in P/D), while in synchro, it is awarded to a group. In addition, it is not readily obvious whether a synchro team this year has the same members as last year, because all we see is a team name in the records. The individual contribution to a group in individual-focused sports is very relevant, such that should the composition of the group change, it would no longer be considered the same group. This is in contrast to team sports like ice hockey, in which even if team membership changes, the team as a whole is still considered the same. Therefore, I see synchronized skating as more of a team sport, distinct from M/L/P/D.
Do not get me wrong, I have great respect for synchronized skating, but I think it just needs its own "2012-2013 season" page (perhaps linked to this one). Also, the status quo for the past many seasons has been not to include synchronized skating, so maybe it would be best to temporarily archive the synchro material until we have this issue sorted out, lest we confuse our readers. -- Venomwind (talk) 00:32, 2 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Incubation? edit

If we don't get more people to discuss this, is it OK if I put the synchro stuff into an incubator to wait for a solution? -- Puisque (talk) 22:37, 2 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

IMO synchro information merits inclusion on Wiki but I agree with Venonwind that it should be on a separate page because it's typically held separately. And I think Puisque's article is developed enough to be moved out of the incubator. Hergilei (talk) 16:08, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please move it out of the incubator. I think it definitely has enough material and importance. Venomwind (talk) 17:37, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok! :) Yeah, for me it's actually no big deal if synchro is included here or in a separate article. -- Puisque (talk) 19:05, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
