The person who placed the merge tag to merge 2010 South American Under-23 Championships in Athletics into Athletics at the 2010 South American Games did not start discussion or state why to merge. Please discuss here, stating merge or don't merge D O N D E groovily Talk to me 18:55, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

A merge is a good idea as there are only minor differences in the official medallists. Since this competition was incorporated into the South American Games program, it would make sense to merge information here into Athletics at the 2010 South American Games. The results and annotations are more in-depth here and should be retained (with the exception that Jhamal Bowen's long jump medal should be noted, but not listed in the table). I am willing to undertake the merge, which would essentially retain CroesJ's superior article, while adding to it my own in-depth competition report section. SFB 21:11, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Don't merge.
Up to now after almost 6 months, there is no justification for a merge into Athletics at the 2010 South American Games other than "A merge is a good idea". Nobody is really interested in the idea, even the nominator for merging did not start discussion or state why to merge the articles.
Articles on the South American Under-23 Championships in Athletics are completely covered. On the other hand, in the English version of Wikipedia, all articles on South American Games are rated only stub-class, articles on Athletics at the South American Games are even not existent except for the 2010 venue. There is no reason to destroy the intact structure of South American Under-23 Championships in Athletics in favour of poorly maintained South American Games articles.
All individual articles on e.g. Athletics at the 2010 South American Games – Men's 100 metres ... Athletics at the 2010 South American Games – Women's heptathlon have to be revised: not only the dead links, but athletes from Panamá have to be added, and have to be marked, as well as the athletes from the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba have to be dealt with to work out the differences between the South American Under-23 Championships and the South American Games.
South American Under-23 Championships are biannual, while South American Games are quadrennial. There number of consequences is numerous:
Championships records are not necessarily identical to South American Games records. => different treatment.
What about the infoboxes? Different number of nations participating, different number of number of athletes participating, different number of events (10.000 metres women!), different links to both previous and next events.
What about the medal tables?
Consequently, two different infoboxes and two different medal tables will have to be published in the same article leading to some kind of confusion.
What about the team trophies awarded at the South American Under-23 Championships, but not at the South American Games?
@SFB: better save your short time for more important things rather than doing all the work necessary for the merge.
