"Only election in Canadian history" with fewer seats

The opening paragraph includes the uncited claim, "It was also the only election in Canadian history where fewer total seats were contested compared to the previous vote (264 instead of 265)." However it appears from List of Canadian federal general elections that the same happened in 1896. I can't find any details on the 1896 situation so maybe there was anomaly that makes the "contested" claim true.
