Inspiration for "The Orphans of Simitra"? edit

In 1955, French author and schoolmaster Paul-Jacques Bonzon published Les orphelins de Simitra, a story of two young Greek children, brother and sister, who are orphaned by an earthquake striking their island. They are then adopted as refugees first in Holland and later in France. The book won prizes. Evidently the story was inspired by the earthquake of 1953. It appears that "Simitra" is a fictional place, which makes it impossible to tie it to Kefalonia. It's a reasonable surmise, but not one that we can add without a reliable source to back it up. Mikenorton (talk) 21:42, 10 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

The article mentions that this was the first time Israel, a small and recently founded, gave aid to a foreign nation. The rescue of the Jews of the area when the nazis occupied it was mentioned by the Israelis: "We have not forgotten."

The nazis asked the local leaders to provide a list of the hundreds of Jews -- the mayor and the local bishop gave the invaders their own names only. No Jews were listed and most (all?) locals survived the Holocaust. 50.230.251.244 (talk) 04:55, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
