The article says that the election was held on 22 July 1887. I've had a look at some newspapers and from that, it would appear that the general election was held on Monday, 26 September 1887:

What's given in the article appears to be wrong, but I don't just want to go ahead and change it, as it then talks about "confusion in Wellington in September 1887 when the members gathered to form a government" - I can't imagine that they would have all made it to Wellington before the month was over.
