"Mr. Allen, the Whig" edit

Who was the man The Spectator calls "Mr. Allen, the Whig"? I surmise Robert Allen, a Town Councillor who was made Serjeant-at-law in 1846 and stood in the 1847 election. Other Allens mentioned in "Modern Birmingham and its institutions: a chronicle of local events, from 1841 to 1871" are

  • J. R. Allen, temperance ally of George Dawson and co-founder in 1846 of the Birmingham Clerks' Association and Birmingham Mercantile and Literary Institute
  • W. S. Allen, of the 1851 Kossuth Committee
  • "Mr. Allen", principal vocalist at an 1846 concert.
