Talk:義安

@Prisencolin: The main reason I redirected it was that page titles should be in English. The only foreign-language titles I’ve seen are redirects. I don’t read Chinese, so I have no idea what “義安” means or sounds like. I redirected it to Yian because that was a dab page and it included the first entry (Yi'an District).

Since you clearly know what this means and what it sounds like, please choose an appropriate target to redirect it to. If it isn’t a redirect, this title should be deleted. — Gorthian (talk) 21:51, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • It's a case of WP:IAR and WP:COMMONSENSE, the thing with Chinese character is that there is no definite pronunciations to them. Additionally, although some people may have a preference towards Hanyu Pinyin and Mandarin Chinese, most of the articles that are about concepts represented by the characters "義安", are not spelled "Yi An", therefore I believe this DAB page should stay. --Prisencolin (talk) 22:10, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
    • That’s why there are so many transliterations in our articles about Chinese things (as well as other languages). But, to the vast majority of the readers of enwiki (including me), the title of this article looks like a scribble, and many of the articles listed don’t seem alike at all. Again, I reiterate that “on the English Wikipedia, article titles are written using the English language”. If you don’t want to redirect it somewhere, my next step will be to take it to WP:AFD. ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gorthian (talkcontribs) 23:01, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
      • Article titles are indeed required to be in (a possibly extended) variant of the Latin alphabet, but I don't think the extent to which this requirement should be applied to dab pages is a completely straighforward matter. The Chinese term can be an acceptable foreign-language redirect to several articles, apparently, and with the absence of a primary topic, this looks precisely like the situation where we would want to disambiguate. Also, this page isn't the only one of its kind (there are about a hundred), and it seems likely that there are many more that could be created – which does seem to present maintenance problems. I think a braoder discussion at the village pump might be a more logical next step than a single AfD. – Uanfala (talk) 23:25, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
        • I’m always amazed at the seemingly infinite number of obscure little corners to be found in the Wikipediaverse. Thanks to both of you for pointing out a couple more for me, especially Prisencolin, in this edit. I didn’t even know that template existed!
I still think it would be ideal to keep the number of this kind of dab to a necessary minimum, and I won’t be editing many of them, but they must be useful, after all. — Gorthian (talk) 05:59, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
