- 1888 — Bertha Benz, wife of the inventor of the automobile Karl Benz, takes her husband's car, the Benz Patent Motorwagen for a 180 km (112 mi) overnight trip, the first ever long-distance automobile journey. Since 2008 this event is commemorated by a Bertha Benz Memorial Route.
