Kitatono Station opened on 3 November 1911. From 1943 to 1956, the name of the station was officially pronounced "Kitadono Station".[citation needed] With the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR Central. The current station building was completed in 1991.[citation needed]

In fiscal 2016, the station was used by an average of 287 passengers daily (boarding passengers only).[1]
