Hughes joined the National Youth Theatre as a teenager,[2] before going on to study drama at LAMDA, where he won the Alec Clunes Award for Best Actor. When he first moved to London, he shared a house with fellow Welsh actor Michael Sheen.[2] He revealed in 2013 he gave up Midsomer Murders because the relentless commute he endured almost every day for ten months of the year was beginning to affect his health.[3]
