In October 2017, it was announced that a film adaptation of Hamlet was in the works from a screenplay by Mike Lesslie with Riz Ahmed starring. Netflix was in negotiations to finance and distribute.[2] The film would languish in development hell until May 2022, when it was reported that Aneil Karia would direct the film; Ahmed was still set to star as well as produce. Morfydd Clark was cast as Ophelia and Joe Alwyn as her brother Laertes.[3]

Principal photography took place in London, England from November 8 to December 21, 2023.[4][5] In January 2024, Focus Features acquired international distribution rights to the film.[6][7]
