In the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, Markandayan's journey took a significant turn during the 2019 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by-elections when the AIADMK party denied him a ticket. This decision led Markandayan to contest independently as a rebel candidate from the Vilathikulam constituency, thereby resigning as the spokesperson of AIADMK. Consequently, the AIADMK leadership expelled him from the party, marking a pivotal moment in his political career. Despite the odds, Markandayan's independent candidacy garnered significant attention, securing a notable 28,000 votes.

Markandayan's commitment to public service and his continued relevance in Tamil Nadu politics were reaffirmed when he aligned himself with the DMK party. In the 2021 Assembly Elections, he contested once again from the Vilathikulam constituency under the DMK banner, successfully retaining his seat after a five-year hiatus. His victory in the election was resounding, securing a margin of 40,000 votes over the AIADMK candidate, thus solidifying his standing as a formidable political figure in the region.

Beyond his political endeavors, Markandayan is actively involved in the field of education through his leadership of the Ambal Educational Trust and Ambal Kosalai, reflecting his commitment to societal progress and development.
