Wanstead Golf Club is a parkland golf club located in Wanstead, East London. It is a member of the Essex Golf Union.

The club was originally called Wanstead Park Golf Club and opened first as a 9 hole course in 1893.

The course is now an 18 hole, par 69 course, measuring 6014 yards from the back tees.

History

edit

The golf club was started by J Gurney-Fowler, R.B. Johnson and R Adam-Ellis, the first captain, the honorary secretary and honorary treasurer respectively. The original course was designed by prolific course architect Tom Dunn and built by James MacPherson under the direction of club member Mr Liddon Walters.[1], formerly of St Andrews and Mitcham Golf Club and Wanstead's first pro. Upon the formation of the club about 130 members joined, including 40 women. In 1898, the course was extended to 14 holes and then finally to 18 in 1913; with the addition of a new piece of land known as 'the field'[2].

In 1946 Jean Hetherington, Wanstead club member won the Ladies Open Championship. Simon Khan, twice European Tour winner, is a former club member.

The Course

edit

The course of Wanstead Golf Club is characterised by "relatively generous fairway widths, lined by trees; with especially narrow greens which reward accurate iron shots".

The course hold hallmark's of Tom Dunn's oft criticised "Victorian Penal" style of architecture, with small greens very much part of Wanstead's architectural style, even after Dunn's original 9 holes has been significantly amended in the 20th century.

Wanstead is a notable golf course in the landscape of Greater London due to its proximity to Wanstead Underground Station, which allows residents across London to access the course with relative ease.

The course is recognised as the 44th best golf course in Greater London according to GolfLists[3].

Wanstead is a member of the 1893 Club, a group of golf clubs formed in 1893, that offer each other reciprocal arrangements[4]
