Trey Funk

Trey Funk is a former American collegiate basketball player and current elementary school teacher born February 20, 2001. Funk played college basketball for the Yakima Valley Yaks.[1]

Personal life

Funk was born and raised in Yakima, Washington, and attended both West Valley High School and Yakima Valley College. Both his parents, Ray Funk and Lonni Rodriguez-Funk are educators at Yakima Valley College.[2][3] Growing up, Funk's father Ray, was the athletic director and head men's basketball coach at Yakima Valley College in Yakima, Washington.[4] Funk graduated from West Valley High School in 2020 and received his degree in elementary education in 2024 at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington while being a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, serving as head recruitment chair.[5][6]

High school career

Funk enrolled in high school at West Valley High School in Yakima, Washington to play under Gonzaga alumni head coach Jon Kinloch. During his freshman year (2016-17), he played varsity basketball for the Rams, helping them put together a stellar 14-6 record.[7][8] Funk tallied one three point basket his freshman year against Moses Lake.[9] Funk began to carve out a 'sixth man' role for the Rams during his sophomore year (2017-18) and scored a career high 11 points with multiple three point baskets against Eisenhower High School in a 73-51 victory on January 12, 2018.[10] The 2017-18 Rams fell short in the playoffs, falling to a 9-12 record after a tough loss to the Moses Lake Mavericks.[11]

During his junior campaign (2018-19), Funk was a varsity starter for the Rams under head coach Jon Kinloch and assistant coach Ray Funk.[12] Funk was a key contributor to the Ram offense and two-three zone strategy that worked effectively against Columbia Basin Big 9 opponents. Funk helped the Rams win the CBBN league championship over the Davis Pirates in a 63-59 victory. Funk made an impact in breakout fashion, scoring a new career high of 21 points with three 3-point field goals on Feburary 8, 2019.[13] At West Valley, Funk additionally played alongside star players Idaho State center Conner Turner and Pepperdine guard Malachy Caffrey during the 2018-19 season.[14][15]

Upon entering his senior season with the Rams (2019-20), Funk played on the Amateur Athletic Union circuit alongside guards Josh and Zach Baugher for Team Jones Oregon. [16] As a senior, Funk was a starter on his high school team and helped lead them to their first district championship win in eight years on his 19th birthday on February, 20, 2020. The victory came over the Eastmont Wildcats, while Funk scored 13 points and gave the Rams a 13-0 league record, winning both the league and district titles, ultimately giving him and his teammates a trip to the Tacoma Dome and additionally claiming their first 4A state birth in eight years.[17][18] Funk had several other notable performances throughout his senior year including scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds in a season opener against Southridge on December 3, 2020, helping the Rams win the 2019 Oregon Holiday Hoopfest in Bend, Oregon on December 30, 2019, and scoring 12 points with three 3-point field goals in a big win at Wenatchee on February 12, 2020.[19][20][21] Funk additionally played alongside star athletes Seattle Pacific wing Logan Kinloch and University of North Carolina infielder Jackson Van De Brake.

Concluding his senior year, Funk also won second-team all-CBBN honors along with making the all-CBBN boys basketball sportsmanship team.[22] Futhermore, Funk received a basketball scholarship to continue his education and athletics at Yakima Valley College under Nevada Ulumni head coach London Wilson.[23]

Off the court Funk was elected to be a part of his high school's prom court during the COVID-19 Shutdown.[24]

College career

Following high school, Funk enrolled at Yakima Valley College and played men's basketball while pursuing a degree in elementary education.[25] During his freshman year (2020-21), he played alongside future NBA prospect MarJon Beauchamp during a shortened two-month season due to COVID-19. Funk described his time playing with Beauchamp as 'a blessing' and cherished their time on the court together for that short span of time.[26] Funk helped the yaks gain strength going into the 2021-22 basketball season, as their COVID season record was 7-7.[27] He recorded 11 total games played, with a career high eight points and two three pointers against Columbia Basin College on May 26th, 2021.[28]

Funk began his sophomore campaign with the Yaks during the fall of 2021. He recorded 30 games played while making eight starting line-up appearances and tallied a new NWAC career high of 10 points on December 18th, 2021 vs. Peninsula College.[29][30] In March, Funk helped lead his team to the 2022 NWAC basketball championships while averaging just below 12 minutes per game. Funk helped lead his team to the NWAC championship game against Bellevue College on March 27th, 2022. Funk then helped the Yaks lift the 2022 NWAC men's basketball championship trophy in the air after a 70-57 victory over Bellevue.[31][32] Funk once again played alongside former high school teammate Conner Turner, who transferred in to Yakima Valley from Idaho State the year prior. Funk and Turner would only play one year together at the collegiate level.[33]

Funk additionally helped his team to a 88-72 win over Lower Columbia College to claim the Red Devil Classic title in Longview, Washington on November 28, 2021.[34][35] He would also have an article written by the YVC Voice, regarding his plans post-basketball at Yakima Valley College while being chosen as his team's 'altitude award' winner at the 2022 YVC student athlete annual award ceremony.[36] [37]

Career post basketball

Funk recently graduated from Washington State Univeristy in Pullman, Washington with a degree in elementary education. He was heavily in involved in his fraternity (Beta Theta Pi), while graduating with Magna Cum Laude Honors through the College of Education. Throughout his time at Washington State University, Funk has been involved in several student teaching internships and practicum experiences on his way to becoming an elementary school teacher.

Funk was additionally featured in winning WSU's greek life 3 on 3 basketball tournament, which was hosted by Washington State Cougar Athletics.[38][39][40]
