Draft:The Harbour School

  • Comment: Let me expand on the very on-point comment below. What you are doing when you write an encyclopedia article is reporting on what others have written on the subject in reliable secondary sources. That's all. You are not actually writing about the subject, you are writing about what has been written about the subject. Hope that helps you understand. 4.37.252.50 (talk) 16:12, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: This draft has multiple issues, and I'd say it is far from acceptable. Just to name a few (and this list may be incomplete):
    • The lead section mentions twice that THS is an international school.
    • I can see external links in the body
    • The tone and style are ridiculous, for example:
    ○ "[THS] follows an American common core curriculum that has been adapted to be consistent with both American and British standards within the United States and internationally." How much emphasis do you want to put on good English teaching? YES!
    ○ "Currently, math, reading, and writing are taught as well as science, history, and arts (…)" – please, what is not taught? And when is currently? August 2024? Or Maybe May 2019, when this draft was first created?
    ○ "The Grove (…) features award winning[12][13][14][15] (…)" This is way too many footnotes. Please have a look at WP:REFBOMBING.
    ○ "The Garden campus is a modern learning space designed for high school students."
    ○ "The e.a.r.t.h. project is expected to be completed in 2028." Who knows that?
    ○ The entire "Sustainability" section is bollocks.
    • The photograph gallery is a copyright infringement compilation. I'm also wondering if anyone has asked the children's parents' permission to upload that photograph to Commons? (Note: commons:Special:Diff/908881481)
    • Too many bold claims are not attributed to any sources, for example:
    ○ "The e.a.r.t.h. project is expected to be completed in 2028."
    ○ "The Garden campus is a modern learning space designed for high school students."
    ○ "The high school follows an American based Carnegie credit system and students receive a U.S. high school diploma. The Advanced Placement program is also available for high school students."
    ○ "The average student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1."
    ○ "The school provides education for over 300 students representing more than 25 nationalities."
    • The GPS coordinates are broken
In general, this draft needs much more work: You must cite sources that indicate why the subject is notable, and the tone and style must become way less praising. Wikipedia is not a place to promote the subject. It doesn't matter which American-British International standards the curriculum has been adapted to, how sustainable the school is, where its students come from or how many awards its building has won. Please let us know what reliable, secondary sources that are intellectually independent of the subject have to say. Best, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 17:35, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: For notability per WP:ORG, we need to see independent and reliable secondary sources with significant coverage of the school itself. DoubleGrazing (talk) 06:50, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: Not one of the sources cited counts towards notability. DoubleGrazing (talk) 06:02, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: Possible undeclared paid editing based on creator's username, awaiting user to respond on talk page. -- NotCharizard 🗨 03:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: @user:Notcharizard: The paid editing has since been declared, so that's acceptable. Best, --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 17:38, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

The Harbour School (THS) is an international school[1] located in Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong. Founded in 2007, the school serves kindergarten, middle, and high school students across two campuses. It follows the American curriculum. The school provides education for over 300 students representing more than 25 nationalities.[2]

History

edit

The first THS campus was established in 2007 in Kennedy Town with 7 students. In 2009, the school moved to its main campus at Kennedy Town Centre with 75 students.[3]

THS gained accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 2013 and in 2015 won their bid for a permanent government building (later established as "The Grove" campus). The first Ap Lei Chau campus, "The Garden", opened in the fall of 2015 with 14 classrooms and 226 students.[4]

In the fall of 2017, THS opened the second Ap Lei Chau campus, "The Grove"[5][6] for primary students from grades 1 through 6.

The Head of School is Dr. Jadis Blurton.[7][8] In May 2021, THS was awarded the Hong Kong International School of the Year, Best School[9] - Humanities and Social Studies, and Best Technology Program at the Hong Kong Living Education Awards. THS won Best Teaching and Learning at the ISC International School Awards in 2022[10].

In 2024, THS partnered with Ocean Park to provide students with opportunities to expand their exposure to sustainability issues.[11]

Curriculum

edit

The Harbour School follows an American common core curriculum.[2]

THS offers an experiential learning approach for there students[12][13]. The high school follows an American based Carnegie credit system and students receive a U.S. high school diploma. The Advanced Placement program is also available for high school students.

The average student-to-teacher ratio is 8:1.

The Social Impact and Sustainability Program (SISP)[14][15] is part of the THS curriculum that focuses on promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the education landscape in Hong Kong.[16] It began in 2021[17] to promote the is formulated as a structured educational framework, providing supplementary developmental activities to students based on the assigned initiatives guided by the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Facilities

edit

The Harbour School currently offers two campuses.

The Grove is a 6000m2 building that has facilities that help further support The Harbour school's interdisciplinary experiential learning[18][19]approach including three Centres of Excellence[20][21]

  • Marine Science Centre[22]
  • The Foundry
  • Black Dolphin (THS sailboat)[23][8]

The Garden campus is for high school students.

Through the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, The Harbour School is working with Lifewire Foundation to convert the Tai Tam Tuk Raw Water Pumping Station Staff Quarters Compound (a declared monument)[24] into the "e.a.r.t.h – Eco, Art & Culture, Revitalisation, Technology and Heritage" project.[25][26]

The project will set up a school for nature-based early childhood education, teacher training and after-school nature-based experiential learning programmes. It will provide approximately 150 places for children aged 3-8 (from PN - K3 initially).[26]

The e.a.r.t.h. project is expected to be completed in 2028.[26]
