An annual highlight of Ghana's music business, Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) replaced the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) owing to sponsorship changes.[1]. Its main goal, since its founding in 2000 by the local event organizing business Charter House, has been to honor and acknowledge the contributions made by Ghanaian musicians to the development and improvement of the country's musical scene. This awards ceremony provides a stage for honoring the abilities and accomplishments of musicians who have been instrumental in forming and growing the local music scene[2].
The event, which takes place in April, May, or June every year, is shown locally on GHOne TV, GTV, or TV3 as well as internationally on Akwaaba Magic on DStv and GOtv satellite[3].
Award Plaque
editOver the years, the Telecel Music Awards has been given out in various configurations, the most recent one was introduced before to the 2019 ceremony. It is made up of a Gold Star plaque with a circle hole in it and guitar-like strings on both faces[4]
Event Grounds
editThe 2000 launch ceremony took place in Accra's National Theatre of Ghana until 2004, at which point it relocated to the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), where it has remained ever since. Since moving to the AICC, the event has been hosted at its Main Hall until 2018, with the exception of the 2010, 2011, and 2012 editions, which were held at the AICC's Dome. The Grand Arena (formerly the New Dome) at the AICC has served as the event's home since 2019.
