Development

edit

In September 2013, Roland Emmerich revealed that he was going to make a reboot-type sequel to his 1994 film, Stargate, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM).[1] In May 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures signed on to collaborate, with Emmerich signed on as director, and the original's co-writer and producer Dean Devlin attached as producer.[2] In February 2015, Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods were attached as screenwriters, after previously collaborating with Emmerich on Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).[3] In November 2016, Devlin stated the film was unlikely to proceed.[4] In February 2022, Emmerich doubted the film was happening, but stated he would return if it was to be made, mainly due to contractual obligations.

In July 2022, it was reported that Amazon Studios (later renamed Amazon MGM Studios in 2023) was looking to make the film for their streaming service, Prime Video, following their acquisition of MGM.[5] Shortly after, fans of the franchise expressed hype on social media, notably in the trend of the hashtag #WeWantStargate on Twitter.[6]

Casting

edit

In July 2022, it was revealed that Amazon intends to bring the cast from the original film for the project, while looking towards Liam Hemsworth for a major role, after previously collaborating with Emmerich on Independence Day: Resurgence.[5][7]

Release

edit

Stargate is set to be released in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios Distribution via streaming on Prime Video.[5] Initially the film was to be released theatrically worldwide and in select territories by Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM, respectively.[2]

Future

edit

The film is set to be the first installment of a planned trilogy.[1][5]
