Siggiewi Rowing Club is a voluntary organization founded in 2016 in the Maltese town of Siggiewi. The club is registered with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organizations and has been actively involved in rowing since its inception, with a particular focus on para-rowing.[1]
History
editSiggiewi Rowing Club was established on August 25, 2016, and soon after gained observer status with the Rowing Association of Malta. The club officially became a full member of the Rowing Association of Malta on January 19, 2022, which allowed its members to participate in national and international competitions.[1]
Activities and achievements
editSince its founding, the club has attracted a large number of sports enthusiasts committed to fostering sportsmanship and friendship through rowing. The club is especially noted for its work in para-rowing and brings together athletes of all ages and abilities, including para-athletes and athletes with intellectual disabilities. Club activities include sliding-seat competitions and indoor rowing, with members regularly participating in national and international events.[2]
Some significant moments in the club's history include:
- British Virtual Rowing Championship (September 2021): Oven Malia won two gold medals.
- World Rowing Championships: Isak Borg set two world records in the PR3-ID 17-18 category, including a PR3 record for 100 meters.
- National Regatta: The club made its debut with its boats and athletes on March 31, 2022, in celebration of Freedom Day.
- Traditional Rowing Races in the Grand Harbour (Valletta) (September 2021): The club participated for the first time during the European Week of Sport. A month earlier, the club rented a space in Marsa, which it uses for organizing water-based activities. Since January 2023, all land-based training is held at the Dar tal-Providenza gym, equipped with the support of various small initiatives and voluntary organizations.[3]
