Peter Dickson Lopez (1950 - ) is an American composer of Filipino American descent. Lopez's music combines traditional Western European methodologies, experimental trends of the 20th Century, cross-cultural influences, and technology.
Early Life edit
Peter Dickson Lopez (1950 - ) was born in Berkeley, California, U.S.A. and began piano lessons early in childhood under the tutelage of Theodore Gorbacheff[1]. He subsequently studied under Joaquín Nin-Culmell at the University of California at Berkeley from where he graduated in 1978 with a doctoral degree in Music Composition.
Paris Years (1976-1978) edit
Upon receiving the George Ladd Prix de Paris[2][3][4] from the Music Department at U. C. Berkeley, he moved to Paris with his wife, Irene. During his residence in Paris, he attended many events and concerts presented by IRCAM.
Early Career (1978-1986) edit
After his return from Europe, Lopez pursued his career as a composer until 1986. He secured numerous performances of his early works throughout the United States (East and West coasts including Tanglewood and the San Francisco Bay Area, Texas, and Minnesota) and Europe (Netherlands and Poland). The Arch Ensemble for Experimental Music performed and recorded his Ship of Death for Male Voice and Chamber Orchestra in 1983[5] which he composed during his residence in Paris. Lopez joined the faculty at the University of California at Davis from 1982 to 1986 where he taught numerous subjects including Electronic Music, Theory and Counterpoint.
