Nick Chuba is an Emmy-nominated [1] television and film composer.[2]

Career

edit

Chuba studied jazz guitar at USC's Thornton School of Music and began working for musician and composer Atticus Ross in 2014.[3] Since then, he has collaborated with Ross, his brother Leopold Ross, and his wife Claudia Sarne, on numerous film and television scores, including Shōgun (2024 TV series), Dr. Death (2021 TV series), Shining Girls, and Dear Mama (TV series).

In 2024, Atticus Ross, Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba were nominated for their work on Shogun in the Main Title Theme [4] and Music Composition [5] categories. Chuba told The Wrap that the trio manipulated original recordings of traditional Gagaku musicians from Japan in order to create the show's signature sound. [6] Chuba told Deadline Hollywood that their goal was "not to recreate period music, but to create this blend that felt alien to the viewer."[7] The score took more than two years to produce. [8] [9]

Chuba composed the original score for the 2024 action comedy Thelma (2024 film), a "breakout success"[10] from the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Chuba's score was released by Milan Records on June 20, 2024. [11] The score received a favorable review in The Hollywood Reporter, which wrote that the main characters' "odyssey in search of Thelma’s money gains vitality from a punchy retro-flavored score by Nick Chuba, which nods subtly to Lalo Schifrin’s classic Mission: Impossible theme, and in what feels like an homage to Roundtree’s history in the original Shaft movies, has an air of ‘70s blaxploitation." [12] Chuba recorded the music for Thelma at EastWest studios in Los Angeles, where Lalo Schifrin recorded the original Mission: Impossible theme.[13]

Chuba's other recent film work includes the Syrian refugee drama The Stranger's Case, which premiered at the 2024 Berlinale.[14]
