Kevin Hamilton[1] is a professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has served as Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at UIUC since 2018.[2] His research has focused on the role of photography in nuclear weapons research, artwork on race and public memory, publication on interdisciplinary research methods, and examination of racial bias in algorithmic systems.[3]

Hamilton’s scholarship and artwork have earned support from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois Arts Council. He has had his work displayed in numerous art exhibitions and is a founding editor and regular advisor to Ground Works, a peer-review platform for interdisciplinary arts research hosted by the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (A2RU).[4] He has also served as Editor-in-Chief for Media-N, The Journal of the New Media Caucus.

Along with rhetoric scholar and professor Ned O’Gorman, Hamilton wrote Lookout America! The Secret Hollywood Film Studio at the Heart of the Cold War, published in 2018 by Dartmouth College Press.[5] The book, centered on the history of Lookout Mountain Laboratory, was the basis of the Smithsonian documentary “Atomic Age Declassified: Filming the Bomb” and has informed other documentaries and exhibits on the nuclear age in the United States and Europe.

He has taught at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign since 2002, holding a previous appointment at Grand Valley State University.

Education

Hamilton obtained his BFA in 1996 in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design. He received his MS in Visual Studies in 2000 from the Visual Arts Program, School of Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
