Mystic Whaler (Schooner)
editMystic Whaler[1] is a 110' gaff-rigged schooner owned and operated by Central Coast Ocean Adventures (CCOA).[2] Launched in 1967 the ship spent her first 25 years operating in the northeast. In 2021 she was purchased and relocated to Southern California by CCOA, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to making engaging adventure-inspired learning and the Santa Barbara Channel more accessible to the youth of the communities of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Mystic Whaler's programs focus on social-emotional development, environmental responsibility, nautical skills training, and enriching STEAM and history education, primarily for youth ages 10 – 18 years old. Programs are offered to schools, community-based organizations, families, and the public. Mystic Whaler's team-building retreats and public education sails both help to support its educational programs for local youth.
History
editSchooner Mystic Whaler was designed by V.B. "Chum" Crockett of Camden, ME, and built by George Sutton, the renowned steel boat builder (Sutton Boat Works) in Tarpon Springs, FL. The schooner was launched on January 19th, 1967, four days after a football game that would later be renamed Super Bowl I. Mystic Whaler is a representation of a late 19th-century cargo two-masted schooner.
In 1995, Mystic Whaler went through a significant overhaul, with added customizations that made her better suited for at-sea education. Mystic Whaler then operated on the East Coast of the United States for the next 26 years, conducting educational programs and charters throughout Long Island Sound, Connecticut, and the Chesapeake Bay.
Beginning in 1996, the schooner Mystic Whaler would leave its home port of New London, CT, each spring to become Hudson River Sloop Clearwater's sister ship on the Hudson River for the season. The two ships provided learning opportunities for students and young people on the Hudson River.
Mystic Whaler also took part in the Great Hudson River Revival along with the sloop Clearwater. Founded by folk singer Pete Seeger with his wife Toshi Seeger in 1966, the Great Hudson River Revival[3] became well known for its annual music and environmental festival. In 2012, Pete Seeger along with David Amram, Raffi, and Peter Yarrow, performed music onboard Mystic Whaler.[4]
In 2021, Mystic Whaler was purchased for the 501(c)(3) non-profit Central Coast Ocean Adventures and made the journey from Connecticut to California via the Panama Canal to continue her educational journey.
Activities
editMystic Whaler currently offers various programs and activities for youth to learn about the ocean and its ecosystems. Its programs promote ocean conservation, STEAM comprehension, environmental stewardship, teamwork, self-confidence, and nautical skills through adventure sailing and educational experiences about marine life.
