Mikchail Vasilievich Gryazev

Mikchail Vasilievich Gryazev (September 7, 1961, Tula, Russia— Febryary 8, 2024, Stukalovo, Tula Oblast, Russia) was a Russian scientist and a distinguished figure in higher education. Served as a Head of Tula State University (2006—2021) as well as a Deputee of Tula Oblast Duma V—VII tenures (October 11, 2009 — February 8, 2024).

He was born on September 7, 1961 in Tula[1][2](according to other sources — in Podolsk[3]) in the family of the Russian designer of automatic artillery and small arms, Vasily Petrovich Gryazev (1928—2008). He studied at Tula school No. 58[4].

Graduated from the Tula Polytechnic Institute. He began his career in 1978 during his studies at TulPI (Tula Politechnic Institute) as a laboratory assistant at ONIL-8. After finishing his graduate studies and defending his candidate of science dissertation, he worked as a junior researcher at a Research Facility of at TulPI.

Since 1988 till 2004, he worked at a Department of Computational Mathematics (now known as Department of Mathematical Modelling), first as an assistant, then - as a — docent.

In 2002 he received a title of Doctor of Sciences.

Since September 2004, he worked as a professor at the Department of Physical Education and Sports of Tula State University and was the head of the Department.

On April 25, 2006, he was elected rector of Tula State Universityon an alternative basis. In 2010, Gryazev found himself at the center of an investigation related to corruption at the university.

On April8, 2021, he resigned as rector[5]. He was replaced by the Vice-Rector of Research and Innovation of South Russian State Polytechnic University, Oleg Kravchenko.

Since 2009, Gryazev was elected as a Deputy of the Tula Oblast Duma, where he was also a Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Construction, Housing, Communal Services and Doad Facilities[6]. He was a member of the presidium of the regional political party, «United Russia»[7].

Mikhail Gryazev was found dead on February 8, 2024, in his car on the side of the road near the village of Stukalovo, the urban district of the city of Tula[8]. Autopsy revealed no signs of violence[9].

Personal life

He was married to Elena Dmitrievna Gryazeva, head of the Department of Physical Education and Sport кафедрой at TulPI, docent, Candidate of Sciences (Technical Branch)[10]. Together they have a son, Vasiliy[11][12].

Awards

He had a Honorary mention of «Honored higher Education Employee of the Russian Federation», he is the winner of the prizes named after S.I.Mosin, the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of Education and in the field of Science and Technology.

Has received a number of awards: Order of Friendship, a medal "For a special contribution to the development of the Tula region", a medal of the Tula City Duma "For merits in the field of education and science", a medal "For merits in the development of engineering education in Russia", a medal "For merits in the development of weapons and military equipment[13].

Controversies

"Dissernet" revealed violations in eight publications of Mikhail Gryazev. Two of them raised questions with authorship, two others had undocumented borrowings, and the remaining two are considered redundant publications[14].

In 2020, Mikhail Gryazev was involved in a journalistic investigation: it turned out that Tula State University spent more than 100 million rubles to hire a cleaning company, founded by a full namesake of the ex-rector. The company history revealed, Elena Dmitrievna Gryazeva, who is the full namesake of Mikhail Gryazev's wife, was also listed as the founder[15].
