Michaela Cook (born 26 June 1995), also known by her stage name Micks, is an Australian country-pop singer-songwriter, television presenter, and host.[1] She has achieved chart success on both the Australian and United States official music charts,[2] produced award-winning music videos, and garnered international radio airplay.[2]

Cook has made notable appearances on Australian television programs including The Great Day Out on Channel 7 and Toasted TV on Network 10.[3] Currently, she hosts the tourism and lifestyle segment Micks Steps In.[4]

Career

edit

In July 2014, Cook began recording and releasing original music.[5] Described by Australian media as "Australia's answer to Taylor Swift," she produced nine country-pop singles, accompanied by six music videos.[2][6] Several of these singles achieved notable success, reaching the number one position on both the Australian and United States Country iTunes music charts.[2]

In October 2015, Cook, along with her sister Kelsey Vincent (née Cook), founded the record label KMC Records.[2][7] This record label subsequently released Cook's entire music catalogue.[2]

In 2016, Cook made her debut on United States country radio with original singles New Life and Chasing Forever.[2]

In 2017, Cook released the single Everything Will Be Alright in collaboration with Tourism and Events Queensland, who sponsored the music video for the song.[8] The video was filmed in the Whitsundays region as part of a marketing strategy to promote the area's recovery following ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie.[2]

In 2018, the music video for Everything Will Be Alright won the 'Best Video' award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival People's Choice Awards.[2][3]

In April 2020, Cook released the single, Taking Back My Crown, accompanied by a music video created in collaboration with Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Gasoline Alley. The video featured significant branding and thematic elements from Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.[9]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cook recorded a follow-up single Let's Go Now, which was released in 2021. The single received coverage in the Rolling Stone India Magazine upon its release.[5]

Cook entered the Indian music market by collaborating with award-winning Mumbai-based musician and producer Vatsal Chevli. Together, they re-produced her country-pop single Rockstar as a Bollywood-pop crossover, blending elements of both genres.[10]

In 2022, Michaela Cook was named as a finalist in the Entertainers category for the Gold Coast Woman of the Year award, recognising her contributions and achievements in the entertainment industry.[11][12]

Cook has amassed over 1.5 million followers across various social media platforms. She engages her audience by sharing day-in-the-life content and interacting with her followers, thereby building a strong online presence.[13]

In October 2023, Cook's wedding received coverage in the New York Times, a prominent American newspaper known for its global reach and authoritative reporting.[1]

In December 2023, Cook was listed among Brisbane's Top 25 Influential and Successful Females by the Courier Mail, recognising her achievements and impact in the community.[14]

Since 2015, Cook has served as an ambassador for RSPCA Queensland, actively supporting the organisation's mission and promoting animal welfare initiatives.[15]

Cook made her Australian National television debut on Channel 7's former TV show, The Great Day Out.[3] She also appeared on Network 10's Toasted TV. In 2023, Cook launched the online tourism and lifestyle segment, Micks Steps In, where she engages in various tourism activities and provides behind-the-scenes insights to her online audience.[4]

In May 2024, Cook further expanded her reach through a collaboration with Manchester United Football Club, facilitated by a major partnership with Marketing Manchester. This collaboration aimed to showcase behind-the-scenes aspects of Old Trafford Football Stadium.[4]

Personal

edit

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Michaela Cook's family immigrated to Brisbane, Australia when she was two years old.[5]

Cook graduated from the University of Queensland in 2017 with a Bachelor of Communications degree.[1]

In October 2023, Michaela Cook married Jake Moyle in Brisbane.[1] The couple had become engaged in 2022.[1] Tragically, Cook's father passed away two weeks before the scheduled wedding date. In a poignant gesture, Cook and Moyle held a private ceremony by her father's ICU bedside and later conducted a vow renewal service on the intended wedding date. The couple chose to cancel the planned wedding reception as a mark of respect.[1][16]
