Masha Trotzky (Russian: Маша Троцки; born on 10 March 1986 in Moscow, USSR) is a contemporary artist, designer and educator based in Stockholm, Sweden.
Life and work edit
Masha Trotzky started her art career in 2010, exhibiting her photographic artworks at the Moscow International Biennale of Young Art at Artplay design center. Later that year she won the “Best Photographer 2010” national award.
Starting from 2011 Masha started exhibiting her works internationally, mostly in Italy[1], Spain and Russia. Apart from solo exhibitions in Bologna, Milan, Ravenna, Barcelona[2], Paris, London and Moscow she participated in the Florence design week (2012).
Opposing the oppressive political regime she left Russia in 2014 and fully embraced the international and European artistic identity. Masha participated in NordArt festival in German (2014) and went on to win the British Aesthetica[3] Art Prize (2015) and become a silver award winner at the Graphis Photography Annual contest in New York (2015).
In the following years Masha has presented various new projects in solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Brussels and Malmo. In Belgium she started working on her artistic doctoral research: a qualitative study based on interviews and combined with video art. In April 2021, Masha defended her doctoral thesis at the Free University of Brussels thus becoming a Doctor of Fine Arts.
Since 2021 Masha Trotzky has been based in Stockholm where she works and exhibits her art.
About Art edit
In her work Masha is tackling the modern issues of identity, globalization, migration and human stereotypes. The pieces often feature a playful experimentation with culturally significant symbols and gestures that questions their mondaine use and perception.
Calling herself a storyteller rather than an artist she frequently goes beyond the genre of photography experimenting with video, installations, sculptural practices and even jewelry. In an 2019 interview she admitted that predisposition for formal diversity: “It doesn't really matter by what means the story will be told - whether it will be a series of photos[4], a vector[5] illustration[6], objects made of stretch vinyl or jewelry sculptures – the story itself, the plot, the characters, the feelings are important. Artistic means is only the language of expression”.
