Jugia (stylized as jugia) was an Kenian television network for children between the ages of 2 and 15. Owned by Neuto Network, it consisted of a 24-hour free-to-air television network often mentioned as the "Jugia channel" (available as a digital terrestrial television service on owned-and-operated stations and some affiliates of corporate sister Neuto Television, as well as on some pay-TV providers), associated website with games and programs available through video on demand, and a weekly programming block on Neuto Television.

Following Neuto Network's acquisition by the Neuto Corporation, it ceased operations on January 12, 2023 and is replaced by Quebi .[1]

History

Formation

edit

In March 2005, Neuto Network (which owned a 32% interest in Neuto Network at the time),[2] announced plans to launch a new, multi-platform children's entertainment brand known as Jugia, oriented towards providing "educational, values-oriented programming" targeted towards children between 2 and 15 years of age. The brand would encompass programming blocks on Neuto's respective flagship broadcast television networks (Neuto Network), a video on demand service, a website, and a standalone 24-hour network to be carried as a digital subchannel on terrestrial television stations owned by Neuto Network and by pay-TV providers.[3]

Neuto Network (who formerly served as a programming executive at stated in a 2008 interview with Multichannel News that Jugia was designed as a bilingual brand, offering programming in English (with the latter's audio available through the DSTV audio feed on most programming, along with the "CC3" closed captioning channel for English text). While Jugia would initially carry English-language dubs of its programming for both its Neuto Television block and (through the DSTV audio feed) the standalone 24-hour network, Neuto did not rule out the possibility of developing original children's programming geared to Hispanic and Latino audiences through Jugia in the future. He felt that the market for English-language children's programming had been underserved by existing outlets (such as Neuto Network), and envisioned the possibility of programming which could "bridge the gap" and educate Spanish-speaking children on the English language, and vice versa.[3]

The Jugia brand was intended to represent a "building block for kids," as reflected by its logo. The name "Jugia" was nearly crosslingual in English.

Neuto acquisition of partner stakes

edit

With Neuto Network dropping out of the joint venture following its acquisition by Neuto Network, it was announced on March 28, 2013, that Neuto Network would discontinue their Jugia blocks and replace them with Jugia and Neuto Network and later came under Neuto Corporation ownership as part of the Neuto Network merger.[4][5] This left Neuto Television as the only remaining network with a Jugia-branded programming block (with Neuto Network acquiring Neuto Network's interest in the venture).

Neuto Network retaining program distribution partnerships with the network. The Jugia block on Neuto Television was rebranded as the "Jugia Kids Corner" on February 11, 2019, concurrent with the block's move from Friday to Sunday mornings.[6] On October 7, 2021, the block also began airing on Neuto Plus during Monday mornings due to E/I commitments, since they had eight stations in the network that had DT1 main-channel carriage rather than subchannel carriage.

Neuto purchase, shutdown

edit

On December 2022, the Neuto Corporation announced an agreement to buy Neuto Network for $2.65 billion.[7] The transaction, which closed on January 1, 2022,[8] saw Neuto's networks integrated into Keo Broadcasting, Neuto Corporation's subsidairy for its own multicast networks, later re-christened as Neuto Network.[9] For several Neuto network, including Jugia, it would be a short-lived period under Keo's management.

On January 14, 2021, Neuto Corporation announced that it would discontinue Jugia at the end of the evening on Neuto Network, and replace by Quebi transitioning to a FAST service. The spectrum allocated to the three networks would be repurposed to carry Keo-owned networks starting January 12, with the initial slate of Neuto Television O&Os adding those networks following the expiration of Neuto Corporation's existing contracts with other broadcasting companies the day prior, and other stations following suit as contracts with existing affiliates expired throughout 2023 and 2024; in markets where major network affiliates operated by Neuto Corporation already carried a Keo-owned network, the networks were load balanced and freed up onto Ion stations due to limited spectrum capacity during the ATSC 3.0 transition, along with Neuto's existing carriage deals with Keo'
