Jean-Gaël Barbara (born September 22, 1968) is a French historian of science, epistemologist and neuroscientist. He is a CNRS research director in history of science at Pierre and Marie Curie University and Paris Diderot University.[1] He is the founder of the Club d'histoire des neurosciences, a club for the history of neuroscience, part of the Société des neurosciences [fr].[2]. He is a member of the Comité National Français d'Histoire et de Philosophie des Sciences et des Techniques.[3]

Biography edit

Jean-Gaël Barbara received his Ph.D., in both neuroscience and history of science, in Strasbourg and Paris, in 1997 and 2007, respectively. He was a former student of École normale supérieure de Lyon in cellular and molecular biology (1989-1994), and obtained a Master of Advanced Study in plant developmental biology in 1992 at Pierre and Marie Curie University. He received his Ph.D. in science at the University of Strasbourg in 1997 where he studied on the electrophysiology of the nicotinic synapse of nicotinic chromaffin cells from the adrenal medulla.[4] As a HFSP post-doctoral researcher at the New York Medical College in 1997-1999, he studied hippocampal cytoplasmic cell signalling with intracellular calcium stores.[5] Since 1999 he is a research fellow of the CNRS in neuroscience and then in history of science. In 2007, he received his Ph.D. in history of science with Claude Debru.[6] He was involved in the CNRS research program on the history of French neuroscience with Claude Debru, Pierre Buser, Jean-Claude Dupont, Céline Chérici, David Romand and 40 neuroscientists.[7] He is the son of physicist Bernard Barbara [fr].

Historical and epistemological work edit

In 2010, he published two books, La Naissance du neurone[8] and Le Paradigme neuronal.[9] The same year he headed the Organization Committee of the annual meeting of the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences[10] in Paris. Among other subjects, Jean-Gaël Barbara studied the birth of the modern neuron concept in the XXth C., the brain physiology of René Descartes, Claude Bernard and the works of his students, especially those of Louis Ranvier. He analysed the birth of French neuroscience and more specifically the works of French neurophysiologist Louis Lapicque and French neuroscience leader Alfred Fessard[11][circular reference], but also the neuropedagogue Georges Quertant[12], or outsider artist interested in neuroscience Jean Perdrizet.[13][circular reference]

International program in the history of the neurosciences edit

Between 2011 and 2015 Jean-Gaël Barbara founded and directed with Jean-Claude Dupont a CNRS research program on the history of French-Russian relations in neuroscience. Three colloquia were organised both in Paris and Saint-Petersburg in collaboration with Eduard Izrailevich Kolchinsky (1944-2020) then head of the Saint-Petersburg branch of the S.I. Vavilov history of science and technologies institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Three books were published with the collaboration of E.I. Kolchinsky.[14]

Collaborative work on the History of the neurosciences edit

Jean-Gaël Barbara headed a research program of French neuroanatomy with neuroscientists and neurologists from France and Romania.[15]

A research program was also devoted to the works of Claude Bernard’s students with Pierre Corvol then director of the Collège de France. A collaborative book was published with historians of science focussing on each of the main student of Bernard.[16]

Jean-Gaël Barbara received in 2018 from the French Académie des sciences the prize Grammaticakis-Neumann for his work in philosophy of science.[17]
