History

edit

Hyve was established in June 2001 by Jake Madders and Jon Lucas. While working during the digital boom at the turn of the millennium, they witnessed the lack of direct, individualised support within the cloud industry.[3] In response to this, Madders and Lucas focused on implementing a customer-centric business model. The name "Hyve Managed Hosting" was settled on in July 2001 to avoid confusion with other businesses.

In 2012, the first Hyve office was opened in Crawley, UK.

Hyve later moved its headquarters from Crawley to Brighton, UK, in 2015.[4]

In 2017 Hyve expanded to the U.S. market in 2017, with the registration of Hyve Corp, and the opening of a global office in California.[5]

In 2018, Hyve formed a partnership with Equinix, offering hosting services in their data centres globally.[6]

Starting in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 Hyve hosted the National Television Award's online voting system.[7][8]

In 2021 Hyve was named as "One to Watch" in the Sunday Times as they hit £12 million in turnover[1].

Following the UK's exit from the European Union in 2021, Hyve formed a child company "Hyve Managed Hosting GmbH" to meet the needs of the DACH market, including data sovereignty requirements for European customers.[9]

April 2022, Hyve, in partnership with Telehouse, began offering hosting services in a data centre in London, UK, peering with the London Internet Exchange.[10]

In late 2022 the cloud hosting firm moved to its new UK office in The Office, located on Circus Street, Brighton[1].

In April 2023, Hyve joined CISPE as its first UK member.[11] CISPE is a group of cloud providers and other technology resellers who are publicly critical of Microsoft's licensing behaviors and have filed complaints with the EC over anti-competitive business practices.[12] Jake Madders told The Register "Elements of public cloud infrastructure that create vendor lock-in, such as restrictions on collaboration between different platforms, and difficulty of switching between providers, are affecting competition and stifling innovation.[11]"

In November 2023 VMware, producer of the primary hypervisor used by Hyve for its Private and Enterprise cloud[13] and the industry standard for cloud hosting, was acquired by Broadcom. The VMware acquisition caused a lot of uncertainty in the industry. However, Hyve was nominated by Arrow Electronics, and in April 2024 was recognised as a VMware Cloud Service Provider partner at the Premier Partner level in the Broadcom Advantage Partner Program.[14]

In February 2024, Hyve opened an office in Austin, Texas to support U.S. operations.[15]

Later in 2024, an office was opened in Berlin, Germany, to support Hyve GmbH.[16]
