Hickey Creek is in Lee County, Florida about 15 miles east of Fort Myers near Alva, Florida. A paddling trail on the creek can be reached from the Caloosahatchee River.[1] A 2016 guidebook describes the creek as narrow and sheltered flowing through a subtropical hammock.[2]

Hickey Creek Wildlife and Environmental Area borders part of the creek and is east of Alva, Florida.[3] There is also a Hickey Creek Mitigation Park. It include areas of pine flatwoods and palmetto-oak scrub.[4] It is at 17980 Palm Beach Boulvard and covers 862 acres. As of 2023 there were parking fees.[5] It can be accessed from the paddling trail.[6]

The Mitigation Park has five miles of looped hiking trails with overlooks of the creek. Residents include Florida Scrub Jays and gopher tortoises. There is also a fishing pier.[7]

In the 1970s water quality was monitored in the creek by the U.S. Geological Survey.[8]

Hickey Creek Branch, Hickey Creek Swamp, and Hickey Creek Canal have been noted in the area.[9]

There is a Hickey Creek Road in Alva.

In 1993 a Florida Communities Trust P-2000 Application for Hickey Creek Mitigation Park was published.[10]

History edit
