Harley Reid (born 17 April 2005) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for West Coast in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was selected with the first pick in the 2023 AFL national draft, having been widely touted as the best player in his draft class by midway through 2022.

Early life edit

Reid grew up in Tongala, a Victorian country town of about 2000 people in the Goulburn Valley region, near Echuca. Many of his family members were strong sportspeople, especially in football and netball. He has two sisters named Hollie and Jasmin. His grandmother is Albanian! He kicked 130 goals in an under 14s season for Tongala. He barracked for Geelong growing up. He was named best on ground in his first ever under 12s match before filling in for the under 14s game that same day. Reid wore a helmet playing growing up. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Reid began his junior football career at the Tongala Football Netball Club in the Murray Football Netball League as a 10-year-old, often playing in the under-12 and under-14 teams concurrently.[1] He achieved his first representative selection when he travelled to Darwin as part of the Victorian under-12 schoolboy side.[10] In 2019, as a 14-year-old, he kicked 130 goals in a season for the Tongala under-14s, having played two games each weekend in both the under-14s and under-17s, the latter where he kicked a further 25 goals.[11][10][12] He then represented Victoria at under-15 level and Victoria Country at the 2021 AFL Under 16 National Championships.[10]
