Dániel Bereznay, also called Daniel or Dani, is a Hungarian esports driver, known for his work in the world of sim racing. He currently races for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Esports Team in the Formula One Esports Series, and is the 2018 Formula One Esports Series runner-up.[3]

Career edit

Bereznay was born on 31 October 1999 in Budapest, Hungary, he started his career in sim racing at the age of 12. Bereznay began participating in online races and quickly discovered a passion for the sport.[4]

In 2013, Bereznay started his own YouTube channel, where he began posting videos of his races and analysis of sim racing events.[5] His channel quickly gained popularity, and he became a well-known figure in the sim racing community.

He began his Formula One Esports career in 2017, making his way into the semi-finals, being placed in the 3rd heat. He finished in 9th in the heat with a best result of 7th from the two races, but was unable to advance to the finals. In 2018, he came back to the series, driving for Mercedes.[6] His season went much better, winning two races, and finishing runner-up in the championship, finishing behind teammate and champion Brendon Leigh. Daniel Bereznay was recognized as E-sports player of the year in Hungary for his remarkable accomplishments during the 2018 season.[7]

For the 2019 season, he joined Alfa Romeo. He won 3 races and finished 3rd in the final championship classification, being the highest-placed Alfa Romeo driver. He stayed with the team for the 2020 season, taking 5 podiums and finishing 5th in the final championship classification and finishing behind teammate and eventual champion Jarno Opmeer. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic F1 Esports drivers and current F1 drivers participated in Virtual Grands Prix, racing each other on the F1 2020 game, where Bereznay won several races.[8]

In 2021, Bereznay made a switch to McLaren, with Bari Broumand and Josh Idowu as his teammates.[9] Bereznay took part in half the races, sharing the second car with Josh Idowu, but scored no points.[10]

Bereznay retuned to Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season, and after enduring a difficult first four races scoring no points, he started to find his form again, taking a best finish of 4th at Monza, directly behind teammate Nicolas Longuet. At the end of the season, he finished 12th in the championship standings with 24 points. Bereznay took part in 8 races, sharing the second car with Tomasz Poradzisz, while Longuet competed at all 12 rounds. At the beginning of 2023, Bereznay left Alfa Romeo[11] and returned to the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Esports Team.[12]

Bereznay had been racing with the number 12 from 2018 to 2021, but for the 2022 season, he opted to make a change and switch to using the number 15, racing with 15 again in the 2023–24 season.
