Craggagh National School is a school. It has been represented at the Summer Olympics and at the Enactus World Cup for social entrepreneurship.
Danny Charlton is principal.[1] Craggagh National School has taken part in many fundraising activities over the course of its history.
History
editIt is not clear from the sources when exactly the school was founded but it has been in existence since at least the twentieth century. A fatal road accident happened directly outside Craggagh National School in 1968.[2] It had to target a teacher loss in 2009, a move which was reported would have set Craggagh National School back.[3]
Craggagh National School sent a flag to Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympics, which were held in Rio de Janeiro.[4] The flag was blue and red in colour with the red colour on the left side and the blue colour on the right side.[5] It was possible for the pupils (and others) to follow the flag as it made its way round during the Olympic Games.[4][5] The flag went to many places. It visited the famous spots such as Sugarloaf Mountain, the famous Christ the Redeemer statue and the Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.[4][5] It was also possible to see the flag as it made its way round the Olympic Village.[4]
Fundraising
editIn 2015, Craggagh National School took part in a music extravaganza when hundreds were raised so that a perimeter fence could then be raised outside a school and an orphanage in Uganda, where it was hoped to prevent the children there from being taken away by wild animals and traffickers.[6]
In 2021, a pupil headed up the Enactus team that competed at the national level to win the coveted title of Enactus national champion, a first and therefore historic UL victory. [7] This meant the chance to represent the country at the Enactus World Cup which was held between 14 and 21 October of the same year.[7] Enactus supports young people who want to establish social enterprises to tackle social issues through social entrepreneurship at the local and the international level.[7]
In 2022, a pupil was named Undergraduate of the Year at the Undergraduate of the Year Awards and received this during a ceremony and reception held in the country's capital.[8] As part of the prize the British multinational company Diageo offered mentorship to the pupil concerned as she continued to pursue her studies.[8] She had been given two Gold UL President Volunteer Awards and also had four different experiences of being formally commended for the maintenance of high grades by the President over a prolonged period of time.[8]
Environment and facilities
editThere is a mountain nearby.[9] There is also a cemetery in the area.[10][11][12]
The playground at Craggagh National School was given to Craggagh National School as part of a donation.[13] Erratic driving has been a problem on the road outside.[14] In 2016, money was used to purchase ukeleles for Craggah National School.[1]
