Taxonomy

edit

The genus Cosmopolitodus is believed to be invalid, and the genus Carcharodon would be more appropriate, the name Carcharodon plicatilis is the most commonly used by paleontologists today to refer to C. xiphodon. Some scientists consider C. xiphodon to be synonymous with C. planus and C. hastalis, but not the evidence for this.[2][3][citation needed]
