In 2024, during their graduation ceremony, Cornerstone International School unveiled plans for a new project: Cornerstone Trinity Academy. This upcoming institution will be a co-ed day and boarding school situated in the Greater Port Harcourt area of Igwuruta, Rivers State, Nigeria. [2][3]
History
editEARLY BEGINNINGS:
1996-1999: Red Cross PH Headquarters
Cornerstone International School was founded in 1996 by Mr. Augustine Smith, a former teacher. The school began as a small nursery with only a few children and was initially located within the Red Cross headquarters on Industry Road in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. [4] Mr. Smith, who previously served as a treasurer at the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, used his experience and commitment to education to establish the school in a modest setting. The early years at the Red Cross headquarters were marked by humble beginnings, laying the foundation for the school's development.
1999-2003: Industry Road
In 1999, Cornerstone International School moved from the Red Cross headquarters to a new location on Industry Road, which would later be known for many years as the site of the secondary school. This move was prompted by the school's growth and the increasing demand for more space to accommodate the rising number of students. By this time, the school had expanded its offerings to include pre-nursery, nursery, and primary education.
PRESENT DAY
2003-Present: Marine Base
In 2003, the nursery and primary sections of Cornerstone International School relocated from Industry Road to its current location at Marine Base Road in Port Harcourt. This move marked a significant step in the school's expansion and development, providing a more permanent and spacious environment for its growing student body.
2004-Present: Establishment of Secondary School
The demand for further educational opportunities from parents and students led to the establishment of Cornerstone International Secondary School (CISS) in 2004.[4]Licensed by the Federal Ministry of Education, the secondary school was officially commissioned to cater to the academic needs of pupils transitioning from primary education. The establishment of CISS was a response to the community's need for quality secondary education and represented a major milestone in the school's history.[5]
2021-Present: Secondary School Relocation
After several years at the Industry Road location, the secondary school was moved in 2021 to join the nursery and primary school at the Marine Base campus. This relocation unified all sections of Cornerstone International School at one site, allowing for better coordination and management of the school's educational programs and resources. This strategic move also reflected the school's continuous growth and its commitment to providing a cohesive and comprehensive learning environment for students of all ages.[6]
Curriculum
editThe nursery and primary school curriculum at Cornerstone International School follows theNigerian standard educational system and includes a variety of subjects designed to develop foundational academic skills in young learners. The curriculum encompasses several areas, including Mathematics, Science, English, and the Arts, each with its own goals and instructional methods. This approach is aimed at preparing students for continued study at a higher level. [7] [8] [9]
The secondary school curriculum at Cornerstone International School adheres to the Nigerian educational system and is divided into two stages: Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS).
In the Junior Secondary School stage, which comprises the first three years, students study a range of general subjects, including Mathematics, English, Basic Science, Social Studies, and Geography. This stage provides a broad academic foundation for all students.
In the Senior Secondary School stage, which covers the last three years, students select a specialization in either the Science or Arts stream, focusing on subjects aligned with their academic interests and future plans. This stage prepares students for national examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), National Examinations Council (NECO) examination, and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, as well as international exams like the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Awards and recognition
editCornerstone International School has been recognised multiple times for its academic achievements, particularly in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The school consistently ranks among the top five in Rivers State, Port Harcourt, for student performance. In the 2014-2015 academic session, Cornerstone International School achieved its highest ranking, placing third overall among schools in Port Harcourt, following Graceland International School and Airforce Secondary School, and 96th overall among Africa's top 400 schools.[11]
In 2021, pupils from Cornerstone International Primary School won the World's Best TV Show Spelling Bee competition. Their victory earned them the opportunity to represent Rivers State in the national competition, where they secured third place.[12]
