Draft:Christmas Eve Massacre

The Maghazi camp massacre, termed the 'Christmas Eve Massacre' by some online publications and social media users because of its occurrence on the night of December 24, 2023, was one of the deadliest single incidents in the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. An Israeli airstrike on the Maghazi refugee camp in the Deir al-Balah Governate in the central Gaza Strip killed at least 70 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.[1][2][3][4]

Background edit

Prior to October 2023, The refugee camp housed around 33,000 Palestinian refugees in an area of 0.6 square kilometers[5]. Due to the events since October, the camp, which is the smallest of its kind in the Gaza Strip, was housing 100,000 Palestinians,[6] most of whom had been displaced from their homes in the north fleeing the heavy airstrikes and the impending ground invasion of Northern Gaza by the Israeli army. They were likely following instructions to move south of Wadi Gaza or risk being identified as sympathizers with a terrorist organization.[7]

Despite following these orders, and despite the camp being the smallest in the strip, and one of the most densely packed places on earth, it has sustained multiple airstrikes since the start of aggression. On October 26, Israeli airstrikes hit the only bakery in the camp.[6][8] On November 5, another strike hit the camp, killing at least 45 people according to the Gaza Health Ministry.[9][10]

The strikes continued throughout the Christmas holidays, as leaders in the Palestinian West Bank city of Bethlehem decided to scale back festivities[11] in solidarity with the over 20,000 Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip up to that point.[12]
