Chiisana Koi no Uta (Japanese: 小さな恋のうた, transl. A Small Song of Love) is a song by MONGOL800 and is the third track of the band's 2001 album "Message". The song was covered by various artists, the most popular being the cover by Amatsuki on 2016 and is popular song for Karaoke in Japan. A cover of the song was the ending theme for the 2018 anime Teasing Master Takagi-san performed by Rie Takahashi and the 2023 anime The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten performed by Manaka Iwami. The song inspired the 2019 Japanese movie of the same name.[1][2]

Production

Kiyosaku Uezu, the band's bass guitarist and vocalist was in charge of the song's lyrics and music. On an interview by Natalie, Kiyosaku says he did not know what is the key was when he wrote the song commenting that the song starts with a lower key but with a higher chorus. He also said on the same interview that he did not use the words "Boku" (, lit. I) and Kimi (, lit. You) while writing the lyrics of the song because Okinawans have a tendency to not use the first person when speaking.[3][4]

The song is the 3rd track of the MONGOL800's 2001 album "Message".[1]

In December 2021, The song surpassed 100 million streams on the Billboard Japan chart making it the second song to pass 100 million streams on the chart after "HANABI" by Mr. Children.[1] In 2022, the song ranked 3rd in the most played 2000's songs in Japan on Spotify.[5]

The song is a popular song for Karaoke in Japan, In 2018, it ranks second in DAM Heisei Karaoke Ranking.[1][6][7] It ranked third in 2013, 7th in 2014, 10th in 2016, 8th in 2017, 4th in 2018, and 9th in 2019 in the Oricon Karaoke Chart.[8][9]

Covers

The song was covered by various artists. Amatsuki's cover of the song released in May 2016 became a popular hit on YouTube accumulating over 100 million views on YouTube making it the first ever cover song to reach 100 million views in Japan. Minami Hamabe's cover for a LINE music commercial ranked 32 on Billboard Japan's chart in June 2019.[1]

The song was also covered by Rie Takahashi as the ending theme for the 2018 anime "Teasing Master Takagi-san" and by Manaka Iwami as the ending theme for the 2023 anime "The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten".[10][11]

Live-action movie

A live-action base on the song started production in 2018 with the same name [ja] and release in May 2019 starring Sano Hayato [ja], Morinaga Yuki [ja], Anna Yamada, Maeda Gordon [ja] and Suzuki Jin [ja] and directed by Kojiro Hashimoto.[2]
