Presentation
editIt was built in 1898 under the direction of Reims architect Ernest Kalas for the champagne company Jules Mumm. Many artists were invited for the decoration: mosaics by Auguste Guilbert-Martin, based on designs by Joseph Blanc and Octave Guillonnet. The caryatids were created by Joseph Wary based on designs by Émile Peynot; they represent four virtues of wine: Virtus, Ingenium, Amor, and Gaudium.
The façade is composed of two distinct parts: a utilitarian part in red brick with a large circular wrought-iron door reminiscent of the shape of foudres; the upper decorative part features five scenes depicting the stages of champagne production, making it an example of an advertising façade. Measuring four meters by thirty, the first scene depicts the harvest with a basket and press. The second stage is vinification, in a large foudre, including the addition of fish glue to the wine. The next stage shows bottling and tying the cork. Later stages occur after the wine has fermented. Bottles are racked, disgorged, and dosed with liqueur. The fourth stage involves commercialization, with labeling, wire capping, dressing, and packaging.
In 1905, the cellars became part of Mumm GH; they were later owned by Veuve-Cliquot and then Jacquart before being acquired by the city in 2010.
After the bombing of the City hall in March 1917, the Reims city council met in the cellar.
The building is protected as a historical monument[1].
