Bird Box (2018)
editBird Box Barcelona (2023)
editIn March 2021, a Spanish language spin-off film set within the same continuity of Bird Box was announced to be in development. Àlex and David Pastor will serve as co-writers/co-directors on the project, which is said to be the first of multiple foreign-language spin-off films. Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls serve as producers. The project will be a joint-venture production between Nostromo Pictures, Chris Morgan Productions, Dylan Clark Productions, and Netflix Original Films. Production was tentatively scheduled to take place in Spain, some time during 2021.[1]
By October of the same year, the production hired its cast including: Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Celia Freijeiro with Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia. The plot centers around a man named Sebastian and his daughter Anna, and takes place in the same continuity as Bird Box. The pair fight for survival on the streets of Barcelona, while navigating a world begin overtaken by an unseen mysterious force that causes the world's population to kill themselves. Production is scheduled to begin in November 2021.[2] By January 2022, it was confirmed that principal photography had officially commenced.[3]
Filming had reportedly wrapped prior to May 2023, when the film was officially titled and a trailer was released. Bird Box Barcelona will debut on July 14, 2023.[4][5][6]
Future
editIn March 2021, it was announced that various projects are in development with Netflix hoping to create a franchise. This includes foreign-located installments with their local language used by its actors; in a similar format to the released Bird Box Barcelona.[1]
Bird Box 2 (TBA)
editIn March 2019, director of the first film Susanne Bier stated that a potential sequel depends on the success of Bird Box. The filmmaker also stated that she would want to take a break from production on the movie, before moving into developing a sequel.[7] In July 2020, writer of the novels Josh Malerman announced that a sequel is officially in development.[8][1][9] The plot is stated to be based on the sequel novel titled, Malorie.[10] By April 2022, Bier expressed interest in the project, while acknowledging that she is not currently involved nor does she know when it will be green-lit.[11]
